African Masks in Art — A Conversation That Is Long Overdue
African masks in art have a complicated history in the Western world — and that history is something I think about every time I sit down to draw.
For over a century, African masks in art were primarily discussed in the context of European modernism. They were celebrated for the influence they had on Picasso, on Braque, on the Cubist movement that transformed Western art in the twentieth century. But in those conversations, the African masks themselves were rarely given proper attribution, proper cultural context, or proper credit for what they actually were — not primitive curiosities but sophisticated expressions of rich visual cultures.
My pen and ink work is, in part, a correction of that record.
What It Means to Represent African Masks in Art
When I create African masks in art from my own perspective as a Black artist, I am doing something fundamentally different from the ways they have typically been represented in Western art history.
I am not treating African masks in art as inspiration for abstraction that then becomes something else. I am treating the masks themselves as the subject — worthy of sustained attention, careful interpretation, and the best craft I can bring to bear on them.
My pen and ink African mask illustrations try to represent the visual language of the tradition on its own terms. The geometric patterns, the headdress forms, the proportions — all of these are drawn with awareness of what they mean rather than simply how they look.
African Masks in Art and the Question of Representation
Furthermore, African masks in art also raise the question of who should be representing them. That is a question I have thought about carefully. As a Haitian-American artist whose cultural heritage traces through the African diaspora, I feel a genuine connection to this visual tradition. Creating African mask art is, for me, an act of cultural reclamation as much as artistic expression.
But I also approach the subject with humility. I am drawing from traditions that are not identical to my own specific background. That demands ongoing curiosity and respect.

However, I chose pen and ink for African masks in art because it honors the hand-made character of the original objects. Every line I place is a deliberate human act — which feels right for a subject so rooted in the human-made.

The conversation about African masks in art is more active and more nuanced today than it has ever been. Artists, scholars, curators, and communities across the African diaspora are interrogating how African visual traditions are represented, who gets to represent them, and what it means to engage with this imagery from a place of genuine cultural investment versus extraction.
My pen and ink work is my contribution to that conversation — a Black artist creating African masks in art from a place of heritage, curiosity, and genuine craft. I do not claim to resolve the questions the conversation raises. But I try to engage with them seriously rather than avoiding them.
Furthermore, I think the most important thing I can do is make the work well — with real attention to what the tradition is communicating, real patience in the execution, and real honesty about my relationship to the material. African masks in art deserve that level of engagement. So, therefore, that is the standard I hold my work to.
