Then I sketch the composition — working through the physical relationship between the figures, the posture, the closeness, the direction of the gaze. After that, I move to pen and ink, where layers of fine, deliberate lines build depth and life into the drawing. The line work is everything in these pieces. A single confident stroke can communicate warmth or weight in a way that a photograph sometimes cannot.
