Art That Feels Like It Was Made for You
When someone hangs one of my pieces on their wall, I want them to feel seen — like the work was waiting for them all along. That sense of belonging, of being honored and reflected back at yourself, is the feeling I chase with every drawing I make.
I’m Kenal Louis. A large part of what I create is contemporary black art, and I’d like to tell you exactly what is black art from where I sit as the person drawing it for you.
Everything Is Drawn by Hand
This is the part I care about most, so let me be plain about it.
Every piece I sell begins as a blank page and a single pen. I sketch the figure first, then build the world around it line by line — no AI, no filters, no shortcuts. It’s just me at my desk for hours with ink and paper, working and reworking until the piece finally feels right and tells me it’s done.
So when you buy from me, you are getting real human craft. You can feel the intention in every stroke because it was put there on purpose, by hand, by me — not pulled from a machine that never sat with the subject the way I do.
What My Collection Includes
This body of work spans several themes I keep returning to, year after year. Some pieces celebrate Black culture through bold graphic design — like my Afrocentric T-Shirt No. 1, where the imagery lives directly in the garment itself. Others are quiet and intimate, like my Father and Son line art, where a single flowing line carries all the tenderness between a parent and a child. Across every one of them, the subject matter stays close to my heart.
- Black royalty — kings and queens crowned and honored
- Family bonds — mothers, fathers, and children drawn with tenderness
- African heritage — African mask examples and tribal-inspired line work
- Romance — black love pieces full of warmth and detail
What ties all of these threads together is intention. Every line is there for a reason. Nothing is filler, and nothing is accidental — if it landed on the page, I chose it.
Why Buy Contemporary Black Art From Me
So why buy from a working artist instead of a big print shop?
Because you get authenticity, a real story, and limited runs that stay special. So many of the big sellers out there push mass-produced or machine-generated work with no soul behind it — no human being who sat down and chose every line. What I offer is the opposite of that. When you hang one of my drawings on your wall, you’re hanging something a real person made with care and purpose.
Buying direct also means more of your money reaches the artist who actually made the work. That’s what lets me keep drawing, keep experimenting, and keep growing this collection piece by piece.
A Meaningful Gift, Too
More than a few of these pieces have left my hands as gifts, and I love that. When you want to tell someone they matter — a sister stepping into a new chapter, a friend moving into a first home, a parent on a birthday — handing them art that honors who they are says it in a way words sometimes can’t. It works for birthdays, housewarmings, graduations, or simply because someone you love deserves to feel celebrated this week. The why is always the same: to make a person feel seen.
Formats for Every Space
Each piece comes in formats that fit any wall and any budget, so you never have to compromise on what you love.
Choose a classic art print, a bold canvas wall art piece rooted in Afrofuturism Art, or carry the work with you on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or mug. Whether you want something framed above the sofa or something you reach for every single morning, there’s an option made for the way you live. The art travels with you in whatever form makes the most sense.
