What I Draw from When Creating African Masks Art
My African masks art illustrations draw from the visual traditions of West African mask cultures — the Yoruba, Baule, Dan, Fang, and others who developed the mask form into one of the world’s great artistic achievements.
In these traditions, African masks art was never separated from purpose.
A mask was made for a specific ceremony, a specific social function, a specific relationship with the ancestral world. The visual form followed from that purpose — the proportions, the patterns, the headdress elements all communicated something specific to the community that created and used them.
So my African masks art tries to honor that purposefulness. The patterns I draw are not arbitrary.
The headdress forms are not decorative additions. Each element in my pen and ink mask illustrations is placed with an awareness of what it is referencing.

The Pen and Ink Process of My African Masks Artwork
My African masks art is made entirely by hand. Black and white, pen and ink, no shortcuts. The process is slow and deliberate — exactly as it should be for this subject.
