Black Women Art Surrounded by Stars: Elegance and Radiance

A brown-skinned queen glows against a sky full of stars, her gaze steady, her crown made of light itself.

“Black is beautiful” was never just a phrase to me. It is the foundation underneath every single piece of Black Women Art I make. Standing in my studio close to midnight, surrounded by dozens of portraits from my Royalty Series, I sometimes feel like I’m floating inside a galaxy. Each face glows from my monitors and prints, all those beautiful faces wrapped in stars, finally taking their rightful place in the cosmos.

The Universe in Brown Skin

When I first began painting Black Women surrounded by stars, people kept asking me the same thing: why space? The answer goes all the way back to my childhood.

My island-born mother used to tell me we came from the stars and one day we would return to them. Back then I thought it was just her poetry. Now, after painting these portraits for hours on end, I understand exactly what she meant. We have always been celestial.

Every portrait begins with that one truth: Black women carry universes inside them. The stars in my work are not decoration. They are recognition. They are my way of saying, in paint and light, what plain words can never fully hold.

Elegance, Redefined

The mainstream art world has its own narrow idea of what elegance looks like. My work follows a completely different set of rules.

To me, elegance is my grandmother’s hands, cracked from cleaning houses but still graceful when she braided hair. It is the sister on the bus, bone-tired from double shifts but sitting straight-backed with quiet dignity. So when I create Black culture art, that is the elegance I am after, strength wrapped in grace, resilience dressed in beauty.

I refuse to paint Black women as fragile. My portraits show them exactly as they are: unbreakable, despite everything the world has thrown at them. That is the energy I pour into every line, every curve, every color I reach for.

The 400-Hour Commitment

People gasp when they hear how much time I put into the Royalty Series. But honest representation takes time, real, unhurried, devoted time. There is no shortcut to it.

I spent three days on one woman’s eyes alone, because they needed to hold centuries of wisdom. Another full week went into her hair, every coil rendered one at a time, because that texture deserves that level of attention and care. Rushing would be disrespectful to the queens I am painting. So I don’t rush.

My digital stylus has become an extension of my soul. Some nights I paint straight through until sunrise, lost in the meditation of making us visible. Because commission art doesn’t only represent us. It repairs something too.

Why the Stars Matter

The stars scattered through these portraits carry more than one meaning for me:

  • They speak to our cosmic origins
  • They honor our navigational history
  • They celebrate our infinite possibilities
  • They remind us we are made of stardust

But mostly, they are there because Black women have always been guiding lights. My paintings simply make that literal, putting on the canvas what the world has too often refused to see.

Breaking the Frame

Traditional portraits keep their subjects neatly contained inside a frame. My work refuses those boundaries on purpose.

The stars spill past the borders because Black women’s influence has never been something you can contain. The hair reaches toward infinity because our beauty was never meant to have limits placed on it. The eyes look straight at you because we are done being observed from a distance. Now we are the ones doing the observing, on our own terms, in our own light.

The Healing Power of It

Last month a woman commissioned a portrait for her daughter’s therapy office. She told me young Black girls needed to see themselves as magical. That was the moment I understood my Black Women Empowerment Art was medicine.

Representation heals wounds we didn’t even realize we were still carrying.

Another client cried when she saw her finished portrait. She said it was the first time she had ever seen herself as beautiful in a work of art. Not “beautiful for a Black woman,” not “unconventionally beautiful,” just beautiful. Full stop. No qualifiers attached. That single moment is why I will never stop making this work. That moment is the whole point of it.

Beyond Aesthetics

This is not about making pretty pictures for a gallery wall. It is about creating mirrors for girls who have never seen their own reflection celebrated, girls who grew up in a world that whispered their features, their hair, their skin were somehow less than. My work answers back, loudly and without apology.

So yes, I spent 400 hours on the Royalty Series. Yes, my hand cramps from gripping the stylus that long. But when a grandmother watches her granddaughter’s face light up in front of these portraits, it is worth every single second. Worth every ache.

If you have someone in your life who deserves to see herself this way, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend stepping into a new season, a commissioned portrait becomes a gift she will keep for the rest of her life. Let me paint you or your queen surrounded by the stars you came from. Each piece is a meditation on Black feminine beauty, made with patience and deep intention. Commissions start at $2,000. I will create something that reminds the world, and reminds you, that Black women have always been the very definition of beautiful.
