Yesterday, while working on a new piece of black men art, I realized something profound. Every Black man I’ve drawn carries himself like royalty—because he is.

The history of portraiture tells us something interesting. For centuries, portraits were reserved for nobility. Kings commissioned them. Emperors demanded them. Wealthy merchants saved for them.

But here’s what they don’t teach in art history — and what Black art collectors know — is that African kingdoms had portrait traditions long before Europe discovered oil paint.
